The US must rein in Israel and promote calm amid escalating tensions with Iran (Neither Tel Aviv or Tehran)

President Biden meets with his security team.
In light of the recent escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it is imperative that the United States and the international community take a principled stance, working to de-escalate the situation and hold all parties accountable for actions that violate international norms and threaten regional stability.

As tensions between Israel and Iran reach boiling point following Iran’s unprecedented direct attack on Israeli territory last night, it is crucial that all parties involved exercise restraint and work towards de-escalation. The United States, as a key ally of Israel and a major player in the region, must take a balanced approach and use its influence to prevent further escalation.

The Iranian strike, which involved over 300 drones and missiles targeting Israel, marks a significant shift in the long-standing shadow war between the two nations. While Israel (along with US and UK support) claims to have intercepted the majority of the projectiles, the attack has raised concerns about the potential for a broader regional conflict.

In this critical moment, the United States must act as a voice of reason and urge both Israel and Iran to exercise caution. The US should make it clear that it neither supports Tel Aviv’s aggressive stance nor Tehran’s retaliatory measures. Instead, the focus should be on promoting dialogue and finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing tensions.

It is essential that the US use its leverage to discourage Israel from engaging in any further provocative actions that could lead to an escalation of violence. The Biden administration must convey to Israeli leadership that a measured and calculated response is necessary to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.

Simultaneously, the US should engage with Iran through diplomatic channels, emphasising the importance of restraint and the need to avoid any actions that could further destabilise the region. The international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, must also play a role in facilitating dialogue and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The world must recognise that the recent attack on the Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria, which killed several members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, was a clear violation of the rules-based order that generally governs international relations. This incident, coupled with the IDF’s devastating assaults on Gaza’s civilian population, which many have characterised as genocidal in nature, is further evidence of the Netanyahu government’s descent into a rogue operator, disregarding international norms and potentially jeopardising regional stability. The indiscriminate targeting of Palestinian civilians, resulting in a staggering loss of life and widespread destruction of infrastructure, is a grave violation of international humanitarian law. The international community must strongly condemn such actions and hold Israel accountable for its role in escalating tensions and perpetrating atrocities against the people of Gaza.

As the fate of the Middle East hangs in the balance, it is imperative that all parties involved prioritise the safety and well-being of civilians on both sides. The US, as a global superpower, has a responsibility to lead by example and work towards a solution that ensures long-term stability and security for all nations in the region.

In the spirit of Tony Cliff’s “Neither Washington nor Moscow,” we must adopt a principled stance that rejects the aggressive actions of both Israel and Iran. By taking a balanced approach and advocating for calm and diplomacy, the US can play a vital role in preventing a catastrophic regional war and paving the way for a more peaceful future in the Middle East.

The Exhaustion of Moral Capital

Moral capital was never just sympathy, it was a strategy. It allowed Israel to present itself as victim and victor, past sufferer and present enforcer. But capital is not infinite. What was once a shield has become a smokescreen. And in Gaza, that smokescreen has lifted.

The world is watching a nuclear-backed state starve and bomb a captive population, and still we are told this is security. But what happens when the story no longer convinces? What remains when the history runs out? Only the force. Only the ruin. Only the lie that it was ever anything else.

The Litigious President: Trump, Epstein, and the War on Journalism

The President has weaponised billion-dollar lawsuits to silence reporting, chill satire, and punish dissent. After ABC and CBS paid out millions, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was cancelled days after mocking a Trump settlement. Now he’s suing Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal over a sketch linked to Epstein. This isn’t about truth. It’s about fear, and who’s allowed to speak.

The Butcher’s Apron: How the Far Right Got What It Wanted

Let’s not pretend this was ever about a child proud of her nation. It’s about the adults. Their performance, their grievance, their weaponisation of the flag. The far right didn’t stumble upon this story; they engineered it. A girl in a Union Jack dress becomes a national martyr, a school is hounded into closure, and the flag flies higher because of it. This isn’t about inclusion. It’s about intimidation. Once again, they’ve made the butcher’s apron the price of admission, and Labour’s too afraid to say otherwise.

Time to Face Facts: Bayrou, Budget Bombshells, and the Unthinkable Truth About Fortress Europe

Europe is not being overrun—it’s running out. Of workers, of births, of time. François Bayrou’s budget bombshell is less about fiscal rules than demographic reckoning. Fortress Europe clings to nostalgia while the tax base collapses. No amount of white-baby fantasies or border theatre will reverse the maths. The future demands what no mainstream party dares admit: migration, not austerity, is the condition of survival.
