The US must rein in Israel and promote calm amid escalating tensions with Iran (Neither Tel Aviv or Tehran)

President Biden meets with his security team.
In light of the recent escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it is imperative that the United States and the international community take a principled stance, working to de-escalate the situation and hold all parties accountable for actions that violate international norms and threaten regional stability.

As tensions between Israel and Iran reach boiling point following Iran’s unprecedented direct attack on Israeli territory last night, it is crucial that all parties involved exercise restraint and work towards de-escalation. The United States, as a key ally of Israel and a major player in the region, must take a balanced approach and use its influence to prevent further escalation.

The Iranian strike, which involved over 300 drones and missiles targeting Israel, marks a significant shift in the long-standing shadow war between the two nations. While Israel (along with US and UK support) claims to have intercepted the majority of the projectiles, the attack has raised concerns about the potential for a broader regional conflict.

In this critical moment, the United States must act as a voice of reason and urge both Israel and Iran to exercise caution. The US should make it clear that it neither supports Tel Aviv’s aggressive stance nor Tehran’s retaliatory measures. Instead, the focus should be on promoting dialogue and finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing tensions.

It is essential that the US use its leverage to discourage Israel from engaging in any further provocative actions that could lead to an escalation of violence. The Biden administration must convey to Israeli leadership that a measured and calculated response is necessary to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.

Simultaneously, the US should engage with Iran through diplomatic channels, emphasising the importance of restraint and the need to avoid any actions that could further destabilise the region. The international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, must also play a role in facilitating dialogue and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The world must recognise that the recent attack on the Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria, which killed several members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, was a clear violation of the rules-based order that generally governs international relations. This incident, coupled with the IDF’s devastating assaults on Gaza’s civilian population, which many have characterised as genocidal in nature, is further evidence of the Netanyahu government’s descent into a rogue operator, disregarding international norms and potentially jeopardising regional stability. The indiscriminate targeting of Palestinian civilians, resulting in a staggering loss of life and widespread destruction of infrastructure, is a grave violation of international humanitarian law. The international community must strongly condemn such actions and hold Israel accountable for its role in escalating tensions and perpetrating atrocities against the people of Gaza.

As the fate of the Middle East hangs in the balance, it is imperative that all parties involved prioritise the safety and well-being of civilians on both sides. The US, as a global superpower, has a responsibility to lead by example and work towards a solution that ensures long-term stability and security for all nations in the region.

In the spirit of Tony Cliff’s “Neither Washington nor Moscow,” we must adopt a principled stance that rejects the aggressive actions of both Israel and Iran. By taking a balanced approach and advocating for calm and diplomacy, the US can play a vital role in preventing a catastrophic regional war and paving the way for a more peaceful future in the Middle East.

The main headline reads: “Police take pro-migrant protesters to asylum hotel.” The subheading says, “Essex officers brought counter-demonstrators to face angry residents, claim witnesses.” Beside the text is an image of uniformed police officers in high-visibility jackets standing in front of a group of pro-migrant protesters holding “Stand Up to Racism” placards. A black Jeep with a visible rear wheel is parked in the foreground. The scene takes place outside the Bell Hotel in Clacton-on-Sea. The mood is tense, with the police forming a line between protesters and onlookers.

The Telegraph’s Riot: When Anti-Fascists Become the Problem

While far right mobs are framed as “concerned locals”, anti-fascists are treated as the threat. The police escort becomes the scandal, not the fact that far-right demonstrators are being allowed to dominate England’s streets with near impunity. When the media sides with the mob, resistance is rebranded as provocation.

The Patriarchy in Uniform: Reform UK’s Law and Order Is a War on Women

When Reform UK’s justice spokesperson declared she would “much rather see a great big strapping male police officer with a female,” she wasn’t just airing a preference. Pochin was laying out a worldview. One where women are too vulnerable to patrol alone, too soft for frontline work, and too inconvenient to be equal. As under Trump, so under Farage: the creeping politics of patriarchy, where power is always male, and women are tolerated only if they stay in their place.

The Real Arsonists of Social Cohesion

The English disease is back. While Scotland holds the line with civic identity and social solidarity, England is once again the testing ground for far-right mobilisation and state complicity. From hotel sieges in Epping to flag-waving standoffs in Norfolk, this isn’t about deprivation alone. This is nationalism curdled into grievance, stoked by those who know exactly what they are doing. And the only person who benefits from this is the man rubbing his hands together, whispering told you so, told you so, and you all know exactly who that is: Nigel Farage.
